Психологическое состояние потребителя в момент принятия им решения о покупке. В момент приобретения нового для себя товара покупатель испытывает опасения, что данный товар не в полной мере будет отвечать его ожиданиям. Если при покупке бутылки пива новой марки покупатель относительно спокоен, то при высокой стоимости товара потребитель может испытывать сильное чувство беспокойства. Чувство риска достигает пика при покупке недвижимости и таких дорогих товаров, как автомобиль, норковая шуба или заграничная турпоездка. Впрочем, психологическая граница осознанного риска зависит от социального уровня потребителя. Кто-то, покупая суп в столовой, побаивается, как бы он не оказался слишком жидким, а кто-то чешет в затылке и думает, а не слишком ли мелкий жемчуг предлагает по столь высокой цене ювелир.

Теория потребительского поведения, согласно которой покупатель принимает решение о покупке, исходя из минимизации осознанного риска (см. perceived risk). Ее апологеты утверждают, что она дает объяснение, почему потребители предпочитают товары раскрученных марок. Согласно этой теории, если речь заходит о товарах с повышенным уровнем риска (скажем, дорогих или важных для здоровья покупателя или членов его семьи), то обычно предпочтение оказывается известным, проверенным маркам. Когда же степень риска незначительна, то потребители не обращают внимания на марку.
